Wintergreen Essential Oil Properties

Wintergreen essential oils is extracted from the Galutheria procumbens shrub which is less than fifteen centimeters tall and part of the Ericaceae family of plants which grow in the forests of Nepal, China and North America.

It has white to pale pink flowers and bell shaped leaves. The plant produces scarlet berries from October to March.

Characteristics of Wintergreen Essential Oil

Wintergreen essential oil has a strong minty scent, although it isn't a member of the mint family. It has fresh, woody and sweet like tones with a birch like aroma.

 

Common Uses of Wintergreen Essential Oil

Wintergreen Essential oil is renowned for its ability to reduce pain and inflammation. It naturally is comprised with approx 96% methyl salicylate.

Wintergreen can be highly effective, but must be used with care and caution.

Wintergreen Oil has no particular benefits for skin, though it is sometimes used to help kill bacteria on the skin.

Body
 
Wintergreen naturally comprises of 96% methyl salicylate. Methyl salicylate is traditionally used in product sold over the counter for aches and pains. Methyl salicylate works by causing the skin to feel cool and then warm and works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation.
It should be noted that Wintergreen Oil has no medicinal claim.

Precautions when using Wintergreen Essential Oil

Use sparingly and avoid for those currently taking drugs without consulting a doctor due to the high content of Methyl salicylate. Avoid use of Wintergreen with children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding and by those taking anicoagulant medication.
